Hinckley LRFC took another step towards the playoffs on Saturday as they defeated Rugby Town 3-1 at Leicester Road Stadium.

Hinckley got off to a dream start, taking the lead after just two minutes when Spencer Edwards headed home a Michael Armstrong corner.

It only took seven minutes for the visitors to level the scoring though when Silvano Obeng managed to beat a crowd of Hinckley players heading home a set piece of their own.

Following the equaliser momentum shifted towards the visitors and showed they were a team fighting for their lives in the division.

It took until first half stoppage time for Hinckley to have a real opportunity and it came from Joe Lyne when the Hinckley skipper took a long range effort with it going inches over the bar.

In the second half Hinckley were much better and dominated play, whilst also creating more chances.

Two minutes after the restart, Aaron Nuttall drove to the byline before playing a ball across goal to Andre Williams who flicked the ball just wide of the post.

In the 64th minute Hinckley did retake the lead with arguably one of the goals of the season.

A beautiful passage of one touch football on the edge of the area saw Ben Humphreys play the ball to Nuttall, Nuttall into the box to Louie Gill then back across goal from Gill to Williams who beat a crowd of players for a tap.

Then nine minutes later Hinckley sealed the three points when a corner in from Armstrong seemingly got caught by the wind, catching the goalkeeper off guard because as he went to punch the ball away he managed to punch it into his own net.

The result and three points came at a much needed time for Neil Lyne’s side following Tuesday’s disappointing 3-0 defeat at home to Anstey Nomads.

And with only six games of the season left, Hinckley know they will need big results like this one if they’re to secure a place in the place offs and the clubs highest finish in history.
