Neil joined Hinckley United Football Club in 2011 as Head of Football Development, arriving from Portsmouth Football Club’s Academy where he had delivered the Under 15 to Under 19 Development Programme in his role as Head Coach. His remit at Hinckley was to pioneer and manage the overall development structure & programme from the Under 14 age group through to the Under 21 squad, preparing these young players for 1st Team football and beyond.
Following the unfortunate financial demise of an ailing Hinckley United FC, a transformed and rejuvenated football club emerged with Leicester Road Football Club being founded on the 4.11.13. The directors of the new club were already familiar with Neil’s accomplished coaching and leadership skills and he was immediately appointed as Head of Football for the new club, retaining overall responsibility for the Youth Development and Senior Development. He also drew on his vast coaching and management experience to restructure his First Team and to assemble and inspire a team of qualified staff to lead and support player development across all of the age groups.
Neil’s emphasis is upon providing appropriate playing opportunities for all of his players, and to develop each individual from a technical and personal perspective to ensure that each player evolves to reach his full potential. Neil leads by example, striving to utilise exemplary practices to instil in his players and staff the high standards to which he himself aspires. He is a highly effective and authoritative communicator who has a genuine affinity with his players which serves to embed a mutual respect.
Neil’s strong personal values are validated by his accomplished playing, coaching and management achievements to date. He began his playing career in non-league football at Leicester United, progressing rapidly to play at a professional level. He played around 250 games as a full time professional over a period of 9 years before having to retire in 1999 through injury. He was subsequently involved in sport related commercial enterprises but his passion for the game led him repeatedly back to football coaching and management, from non-league clubs through to Championship and Premier League clubs, including clubs such as Portsmouth, Woking and Leicester City. He has worked alongside a prestigious list of highly regarded managers, from whom he has acquired invaluable skills and knowledge, equipping him to positively influence his own staff and players.
Neil holds an impressive range of qualifications including the highly coveted FA UEFA ‘A’ level 4 Advanced Coaching Licence, along with the FA Youth Award Modules 1 (Developing the Environment) and FA Youth Module 2 (Developing the Practice). He also holds the FA Academy Managers’ Licence and the FA Generic Tutor Training (GTT). These are complemented by the regularly updated FA Enhanced Disclosure CRB, FA Emergency Aid Course and FA Safeguarding Children and Best Practice.
In addition, Neil is affiliated to a number of professional organisations including the Professional Football Coaches’ Association (PFCA), Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA), the League Managers’ Association (LMA), the Football Association (FA) and the Football Association Licensed Coaches Club (FALCC).
