Leicester Road FC Ladies U18 took on Coventry United U18 Ladies where individual performance and team cohesion was key. We battled with no substitutes against a formidable team.

Leicester Road FC U18 Ladies played their first game at their new home and the first six minutes didn't disappoint; in fact, we were electric - I asked for the ladies to keep possession under pressure and seek out early opportunities. It didn't take long, before Olivia Keene in a new midfield partnership with Alderney, played a cutting pass into space, for Madi to drive through and smash the ball low past an advancing keeper. What a great start and one Coventry United would not have expected. To give some background their senior ladies team plays in the FA Premier Northern League in Tier 2 alongside teams like Leicester City and Liverpool - The Under 18's Ladies team play in the Central Warwickshire Girls Football League 20-21 Under 18 Premier division. We only had 11 players, but all 11 were committed to the cause and team objective - to be creative and press for the ball, forcing errors and defending in the opposition. Holly took upon the captaincy role today and demonstrated good command in set-piece plays, giving Utd much to think about. Against the run of play and a crazy ricochet in our box, Utd scored to level the game at 1-1 just before 10 minutes. We continued to attack and played some great football, confidently keeping possession at times. Had we been playing on a full-size pitch Madi would almost certainly have scored another two as we watched 2 shots just inches sail over the crossbar. It was fait to say we were creating as many opportunities as them, matching them pace for pace. Anya and Alderney combined well on the left, just as Liv K was able to switch play to the right. Our back four were solid and united in defence and Utd definitely struggled against relentless running and pressure we exerted at times. We witnessed some fantastic ball control, quick sharp passing in triangles and determination to win the ball even when Utd popped in another 2 goals; again with some essence of luck. Just before half time Madi was taken down from behind and came off injured.

We recommenced the second half with 10 players, but I couldn't have asked for more (other than communication, which we must work on!) We continued to try and play football whereas any other team would have just sat back and defended against a very skillful and able team. Going down 1-4 didn't deter the grit and determination on the pitch. Neve joined us from the senior ladies squad, although she is only 17 herself and played the number 10 role leaving Liv Moore the role of playing on the last person. Again, despite Utd having a number of substitutes at their disposal, Leicester Road continued to fight back; we had several chances on goal. Beth was kept active at the other end and pulled off some amazing saves along with her bravery to come out and get the ball in one on one challenges. I (like many I think) was very disappointed with the lack of respect that the opposition showed, poor humility I hope we never see again! Regardless, Leicester Road continued to force errors in the opposition, Alderney, and Olivia able to adapt in midfield and cover for each other; another positive taken from the game. Although Utd popped two late goals away, which I put down to our tired legs and lack of substitutes, we certainly gave Utd a tough match. I never reflect on the scoreline, I look for individual progress and team cohesion and there was plenty of this on show. We will not come up against a team of this strength in our league, so this was a mammoth task, but one we conquered. Emma was awarded player of the match for continually trying to raise encouragement and positivity in the team, with clear communication. I just need 10 more players to communicate at this level now. Steve (Walsall Wood U18 Ladies Manager) commented 'you gave them problems, so that's a massive plus for your team to be able to give a team of that quality something to worry about, is a testament to how well you did'. The final score was 1-6, however, is not an accurate reflection of the battle that took place on the pitch.

Finally, I want to take words from Neil Lyne (Head of Football) at Leicester Road FC - 'If progression is being made, then that's all a manager can ask for patience and belief are key components along with hard work and understanding of course'. I can only reiterate his words, I was pleased with the performance and know we will grow from it.
